Always Gold

Hello! I love Supernatural, Doctor Who (though not so much at the moment), Sherlock Holmes (BBC and the various other incarnations), the Cornetto Trilogy, superheroes, movies and TV in general, and reading.

Above all I like a good story.

I like to think that I'm a free spirit so I reblog anything that catches my fancy, though I do tend to pay more attention to things listed above.

TL;DR I'm primarily a fandom blog, BEWARE.

Arizona Professor Offers Extra Credit To Female Students Who Stop Shaving Their Armpits

Professor Breanne Fahs offers female students extra-credit if they “stop shaving their legs and underarms for ten weeks during the semester while keeping a journal to document their experiences.” For Fahs, who teaches women and gender studies, the purpose is to get students thinking critically about societal norms and gender roles.A similar opportunity is available to men in Fahs’ classes who recieve extra credit for shaving all of their hair from the neck down. One student, Stephanie Robinson, described it as a “life-changing experience:"Many of my friends didn’t want to work out next to me or hear about the assignment, and my mother was distraught at the idea that I would be getting married in a white dress with armpit hair. I also noticed the looks on faces of strangers and people around campus who seemed utterly disgusted by my body hair. It definitely made me realize that if you’re not strictly adhering to socially prescribed gender roles, your body becomes a site for contestation and public opinion."

They published a paper about this the first time someone did it, and it showed that non-white young women experienced a lot more pressure from friends and relatives to remove their hair. The authors suggested that because beauty standards are white - long, fine, flowy blonde hair, blue eyes, etc, etc - his body hair non-conformity was more troubling in WOC, as they crossed yet another boundary of femininity. They were also more likely to have darker or thicker body hair, so it would stand out more than on the blonde women, for example. For me that sort of exemplifies why it’s so important to have multiple, intersectional feminisms. Because “let’s not shave our legs!” might be a powerful and important message, but it’s ultimately one of white privilege that sort of ignores the whiteness of these beauty standards in the first place.

► Ten scenes
           Tony’s first anxiety attack

"Check the heart, check the, check the, is it the brain."
"No sign of cardiac anomaly or unusual brain activity."

"So it was poison."
"My diagnosis is that you’ve experienced a severe anxiety attack."
"Me?"

The absolute realness, the accuracy of this scene will never not be important to me. Because this is exactly what it’s like for me. One small things triggers it, something simple but it’s sets off a chain reaction. Breathing is hard because of how clenched your chest, your heart feels like it’s gonna pound right out of your body and you can’t stand to be around people because that only makes it worse so you run and try to calm down. (But it’s hard to calm down when you don’t know what’s happening.)

Presenting the idea that yes, even superheros can have mental illness is so goddamn important and the fact this scene is so accurate and Tony’s anxiety and PTSD aren’t presented negatively is incredibly important to helping change the way our society views mental illness.

so this is what i ended up with for the “make your audience angry” assignment
i dont know about ya’ll but that phrase pisses me right the hell off

Side tip: if anyone ever grabs your hair like the above, clamp one hand HARD down on your scalp where the hair is coming out (think of how you try to immobilize your hair when brushing tangles out so it doesn’t hurt as bad, only do so at the scalp and not further down the hair). Then use your other hand to start hitting the other person (go for the face!) and blocking any blows they may try to make with their free hand. You can also step into them (which removes the tension on your hair) and start throwing your knees into their groin, stomach, kick the side of their knee, etc.
The reason hair-pulling works is A) it HURTS and B) it’s an effective handle, especially because your instinct is going to be to pull away. But reduce the pain and the tension on the hair and you have more room to work with until the other person lets go, at which point you can run like hell or otherwise defend yourself as needed.
